Montana is launching a comprehensive statewide initiative to modernize its science and technology infrastructure, guided by a collaborative Plan and Action Agenda developed by hundreds of volunteers across academia, government, and industry. In partnership with NSF EPSCoR and backed by a dollar-for-dollar state match, this project focuses on advancing high-priority research in biotechnology, optical science, and non-linear mathematics. Key to this effort is the expansion of the Montana Biotechnology Center and the development of a new center for advanced materials, both of which will serve as sustainable hubs for innovation and statewide coordination.

To ensure long-term growth and inclusivity, the initiative establishes a Science Enhancement Program (SEP) to competitively fund research grants, graduate fellowships, and technology transfer activities, while actively supporting researchers from under-represented groups. By integrating these efforts with existing programs like SIMMS and ASSIST, Montana aims to strengthen its collaboration with industry and launch an aggressive public education campaign. This strategic investment is designed to attract top-tier faculty and students, ultimately positioning Montana as a significant and competitive contributor to the nation’s 21st-century scientific goals.
